In the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series the tale of Oma and Shu, an earthbending origin myth, becomes a queer love story. Firelord Sozin. The intensity of their relationship is one that many fans read as something that could have been romantic.
The character grew up in a very different society that could easily have seen gender differently than we see it.
Earthbenders Get a Queer : A live-action series just released and changed one of the show’s minor origin stories to include a same
Today I'm giving an overview of 35 canonically LGBTQIA characters in Avatar: the Last Airbender, the Legend of Korra and it's expanded material. The Kyoshi warriors were created by Kyohsi who is actually a character from the series who was confirmed to be bisexual although outside of the show.
Because of this, he is shipped with many people from the series other than just Mai. This would have been an interesting journey to explore with the character, and there are some people who ship him with Sokka and even occasionally with Jet.
Ty Lee is a character that has recently been discussed as possibly being queer by new and old fans of the series. Sozin is a very flawed character who does a ton of harm, but the story of his friendship with Avatar Roku is compelling.
This category is for all characters who have been gay to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or any other gender or sexual minority. He does fall in love with and marry a woman named Ta Min, but it seems that his relationship with Sozin was also extremely intense and influential.
Happy Pride. Similar to his feminist awakening so to speak, it would have been easy to imagine him also getting rid of the idea that he had to be avatar. While Mai and Zuko have a relationship in the series and end up together in adulthood, too, some fans really wanted to see her date Ty Lee instead.
The fact that these warriors are a group of women who live and work so closely together means that likely some of them would have been queer.
Avatar: Is Ian Ousley : No I’m not (and never) talking about James Cameron’s CGI blue people, but the series Avatar: The Last Airbender
The complicated nature of their relationship as friends could easily have translated into something more romantic. Zuko is definitely a fan-favorite character from the Avatar: The Last Airbender because of his angst, his redemption storyline, and his brooding good looks.
It would have been interesting and important to have Aang have a more fluid gender identity, and this would make a lot of sense given the reincarnation cycle of the Avatar. Just like with Firelord Sozin, Avatar Roku is another character who can be read as straight in that story.
Sokka struggles in early seasons with traits of toxic masculinity, but as he matures and interacts with more of the world, he grows out of this. Their relationship is clearly toxic, but the hold Azula has over Ty Lee seems more intense and deeper than her friendship with Mai.
Of course, a person can go against gender roles and stereotypes and still be straight, but there was an opportunity here to explore possibly a different sexuality or gender identity for Toph. Azula might be a villain of the series, but she is one of the most compelling ones.
