But he hid darker secrets. Few realised Boothby, a star of right- wing politics, was the other person. And that secrecy would be maintained in a cover-up operation which ran to the highest echelons of the Establishment. The love triangle scandalised Boothby in the eyes of colleagues.
The legal eagle made a series of intimidating calls to then Sunday Mirror editor Cecil King. I think he found the idea of infidelity too upsetting. But now, for the first time, the full story behind their relationship is laid bare in a book by author Daniel Smith.

Edinburgh-born, Boothby was once MP for Aberdeen and parliamentary private secretary to Winston Churchill from to He was tipped as a future PM but in he embarked on an affair with Dorothy Macmillan — wife of his friend and fellow Tory Harold.
Devastated Macmillan refused and was so devoted to his wife that he allowed her to live with Boothby for a time. According to Mr Pearson, the brothers had sex with each other to hide their sexualities from the rest of the world, the Mirror previously reported.
